New belt
J. advanced to a new belt last week. He is now an orange belt. It only took him 3 months to do it. The belts are the ranking system in Martial Arts. Every Dojo has there own way of advancing but the belts are the same in the different disciplines. Since the boys take Mixed Martial Arts as well as Judo the belt is the same for both. Which is good because if they had to have different belts for each class would be tough because I have a hard time keeping track of J2's belt. J. is very good about keeping his taken care of. He hangs them above his bed. J. has advanced very quickly. He works very hard and really likes it, especially Judo.
His Sensi really likes him and during his belt ceremony he mentioned how J. asks for a strip every week and what he has to do to earn a new stripe. You need 4 stripes to advance to a new belt. You earn black strips by learning different throws and holds and red stripes for tournaments. One boy at the Dojo has never had anything but red stripes. Another boy has taken 2 years to advance from white to yellow.
The belts go: White
Yellow
Orange
Purple
Green
Blue
Brown
Red
Black
At this Dojo you are limited to your belt by age. J. can advance up to a brown belt. J2 can only get an orange until he turns 7. J. cant get his black belt until he is 16. He has some incentive to do it. One day when El Patron took the boys to class, Sensi Tony asked him to come in the office. He asked E.P. if he could give J. a samurai sword. That is what he loves and has had a few lessons in using weapons in class and is learning the knum-chucks. His dad wasn't super keen on J. getting the sword so they made a deal that when J. gets to be a black belt he can have it. He is so determined now to get to black belt.
This is J's friend who is another J name. They advanced the same day. These two are very evenly matched and when they wrestle together nobody wins. They are both very skinny, strong and flexible. They also do tend to play around a bit. They are only 12 after all.
So we well see if he can advance to his purple belt by June. There is a Judo tournament in March and a no-gi grappling tournament in April so that will give him two stripes and I'm sure he will earn the others.

It's really cool that he's passionate about a sport. He'll stay fit at the same time he builds character.
P.S. How was the movie?
The movie was....o.k. When you are next in town I'll let ya see it. Just remember, independent, not paid actors, one guy with a camera, and the camera adds ten lbs.
